If couples begin a healthcare programme which includes acupuncture, herbal medicine/supplements and nutrition for 3–6 months prior to conception it can have a positive impact on the quality of egg and sperm, thereby encouraging more positive outcomes. Even a 6 week course of acupuncture can help to prepare both partners for IVF treatment. During IVF, weekly treatment is recommended. It is then advised prior to egg collection and before and after embryo transfer. If conception is achieved, acupuncture can be given weekly throughout pregnancy.
In pregnancy acupuncture can help to bring natural relief from morning sickness, backache, anxiety, pelvic pain and insomnia, reducing the need for drugs. As a prebirth treatment from week 36, it helps women prepare for labour and relieves anxiety.
Acupuncture and herbal medicine can help with many gynaecological problems: from amenorrhoea, heavy/painful periods, polycystic ovaries and fibroids to menopausal symptoms.
